Are Storm Doors Worth It? Honest Pros and Cons
Storm doors are everywhere in Minnesota, but they're not right for every house. Here's a straight look at what they do well and where they fall short, so you can decide for yourself.
The pros
- Fresh air without bugs. Swap in the screen or roll it down and let the breeze through on nice days.
- An extra layer against the weather. A storm door adds a buffer between your entry door and wind, snow, and rain.
- Protects your front door. It shields an expensive entry door from sun and weather, so the finish lasts longer.
- Curb appeal. A new storm door can freshen up the front of your house.
- Extra security. Models with a keyed deadbolt add another lock between you and the outside.
The cons
- Heat buildup. A full-glass storm door in direct sun can trap heat against your entry door. Check your entry door maker's guidance if your door faces south or west.
- One more door to open. Carrying groceries through two doors takes some getting used to.
- Maintenance. Closers, sweeps, and roll-up screens need an adjustment now and then.
- Not every doorway fits easily. Some openings need trim work or a special size.
