Patio Screen Door Dragging or Falling Off the Track? Sliding Screen Door Repair Is Usually the Fix

The sliding screen on your patio door is the hardest working screen in the house. It gets opened a dozen times a day, shoved by dogs, run into by kids, and left in the sun all summer. So when it starts dragging, jumping the track, or showing holes, most people figure it's time for a new one. Usually it isn't.

Common patio screen problems (and what they really mean)

  • Hard to slide or scraping: usually worn or dirty rollers, or rollers set too low. Adjustable and replaceable.
  • Falls off the track: rollers worn out, frame slightly bent, or the track itself is gunked up. Most of the time fixable.
  • Torn or baggy mesh: a rescreen job. The frame stays, the mesh gets replaced.
  • Bent frame: minor bends can often be straightened. A badly kinked frame is when a new one makes sense.
  • Handle or latch broken: replaceable parts.

Rescreen vs. replace

If the frame is straight and square, rescreening and new rollers will get you a door that slides like new for a fraction of what a new screen door costs. Replacing only makes sense when the frame is bent past saving, or the door is an odd size and the original is falling apart. In that case we can build a custom frame to fit.

Upgrade the mesh while you're at it

Since the patio door takes the most abuse, it's the best place to use a heavier mesh. Pet screen is a common pick for households with dogs or cats. It's much tougher than standard fiberglass and holds up to claws.

Mobile or drop-off

We come to you and handle most patio screen repairs right in your driveway. If you'd rather drop the screen off and pick it up, that works too.
