Screen Porch Conversion: Fixing an Old, Saggy Screened In Porch Without Starting Over

A lot of older homes in the Twin Cities have a screened porch that's seen better days. The screen sags, the wood trim is peeling, there are a few duct-tape patches, and every spring someone says "we should really redo the porch." Good news: you probably don't need to tear it out. A porch conversion keeps your existing structure and swaps out the worn screen setup for something that lasts.

Why old screen porches wear out

Most older screen porches were built with screen stapled to the posts and covered with wood trim. Over time the staples loosen, the screen stretches, and the trim soaks up water and rots. Fixing one section usually means pulling trim and damaging the screen next to it. If the setup is fine and you just need new mesh, a simple porch screen repair may be all you need.

What a conversion involves

  • We pull the old screen, staples, and trim
  • We check the posts and framing and point out anything that needs attention
  • We install a SCREENEZE® system on your existing framing
  • New screen goes in tight, and the caps snap on for a clean finish
  • We can add or replace screen doors while we're at it

Signs your porch is a good candidate

  • The roof, posts, and floor are in decent shape
  • The screen is loose, patched, or torn in multiple spots
  • You're tired of scraping and painting trim
  • You actually want to use the porch again

Upgrade while you're at it

A conversion is a great time to switch to heavier mesh on the bottom for pets, solar screen on the sunny side, or a better door. You only open it up once, so it's worth getting it how you want it.
